L-Phenylalanine (Abbreviated Phe) is an essential amino acid and is the only form of phenylalanine found in proteins. It is one of the 18 common amino acids, and one of the eight essential amino acids at the human body.

 

As nutritional supplement,L-phenylalanine can be viewed as a benzyl group substituted for the methyl group of alanine, or a phenyl group in place of a terminal hydrogen of alanine.
